Impressions from Africa

In May of 2011, I made a trip to Africa. I was so deeply moved by the people I met and the places I visited that I decided to write an article for the Joan Wakelin Bursary contest organized by the Royal Photographic Society in cooperation with The Guardian. I did not win the contest but I am happy to share the article I wrote.

Food waste: an emerging issue?

Recently I participated in a competition organized by the BBC Global minds network called “My world”. All I had to do was to choose a topic I believed is important in the world I live in and make a 2 min video about it.

Given the estimated growth of global population, we are facing resource constraints so I decided that my video will be about consumption. Living in Denmark, organic food was a subject I felt would be interesting to talk about since this is a country that ranks first among EU member sates concerning the consumer spending on organic products. While I was doing some research for the video, I came across an interesting book written by Tristram Stuart, titled “Uncovering the global food scandal” which made me reflect on what happens at the other end of the food supply chain: the consumption. According to the author, more than 25% of edible food is wasted in Europe as well as in the US. In UK alone, the estimated cost of food wasted every year (particularly grain in form of bread) reached a staggering 10 billion GBP, enough to remind me that change starts at home, with each and every of us, one small step at a time!
